How Abandoned Orders Are Processed as Draft Orders in Shopify

When a customer abandons checkout while using the Cash on Delivery (COD) form, the system records the order differently than standard Shopify abandoned checkouts. This guide explains how abandoned orders are handled and where to find them in Shopify.

Why Are Abandoned Orders Created as Draft Orders?

Shopify does not allow third-party apps to create abandoned checkouts directly. Instead, abandoned orders from the COD form are saved as draft orders with a specific tag.

Where to Find Abandoned Orders

Open your Shopify Admin panel.
Navigate to the Orders section.
Click on Draft Orders to see the list of created drafts.
Look for orders tagged with "abandoned_checkout_releasit_cod_form."

This tag helps identify orders that were abandoned during the checkout process using the COD form.

How These Draft Orders Work

A draft order is created only if the customer has entered a valid email or phone number before abandoning checkout.
Shopify does not send automatic abandoned checkout recovery emails for draft orders, but you can follow up with customers manually.
You can convert draft orders into completed orders if the customer decides to proceed with the purchase later.
